Two Defensive Studs Get SEC Honors

All in a day’s work when you beat a top ten team!

NCAA Football: Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game-Auburn at Washington Jason Getz-USA TODAY Sports

While many are still trying to figure out how to react to Saturday’s 21-16 win over #6 Washington, there are some facts that aren’t up for debate.

Yes, you may be worried about the offensive line, the run game, the defensive backs not turning their heads, Stidham getting happy feet again, and the need for more Boobee.

You, however, cannot be worried about the play of Auburn’s front seven, which is now, after a single week of the 2018 season, an official award-winning group.

Darrell Williams was honored earlier today with the SEC’s Co-Defensive Player of the Week Award after a fantastic game against the Huskies. If you read the stats below, they don’t even include his pass breakup late that surely would’ve been a huge gain for Washington to keep a late drive alive. He also had what was surely another of the biggest defensive plays of the game with his fumble recovery as the Huskies delved inside the red zone in the second half.

And so maybe the conference based its award list on what happened on that one singular play. Jake Browning set up for a little speed option to the right side on a third down play near the goal line, and Nick Coe scooted in with that big left paw, knocked the ball out, and Williams recovered to rebuff the Huskies. With that effort, and a couple of stops behind the line, he’s rewarded with Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week (more like COE-Defensive Lineman of the Week).

Auburn fans get to watch these guys wreck shop against fellow I-85ers, the Alabama State Hornets, this coming Saturday night. We’ll see if they continue their reign of terror and if the offense finds a little groove when kickoff comes at 6:30 pm CST. War Eagle!
