THREE MORE WEEKS TO TIP-OFF!
So for today’s tip-off countdown piece, I’ve got to admit I had to do some homework on the featured player. Of all the players on this countdown, this is one I probably knew the least about. Andre Malone spent about a year and a half at Auburn. The Atlanta native averaged 2.7 points a game in his freshman season and then played 11 games his sophomore year before leaving the program. He averaged 11.7 points a game in the 11 games he played for Auburn and today’s game on the countdown was his best game as a Tiger. Malone would transfer to Rhode Island after leaving Auburn.
It’s also worth noting this was the second game played at Auburn Arena.
Total Points: 28
Date: November 19, 2010
Opponent: Samford
Final Score: Samford 79 Auburn 68
In addition to this being the 2nd game at Auburn Arena, this was the 2nd game of the Tony Barbee era.
Andre was 9-21 from the field, 6-10 from 3-point range and 4-6 from the free throw line. Malone made a trio of 3s in the games first 7 minutes but Samford never trailed in the game. Malone’s 4th 3 would come with 6 minutes left in the 1st half to make it 27-24 Bulldogs. Malone would tie the game converting an And-1 and hit 1 more 3 in the first half to score 18 of Auburn’s 32 1st half points. But Auburn trailed 38-32 at the break.
Malone scored on the 2nd half’s opening possession to make it 38-34. His next basket came 8 minutes later which made it a then 2-point game at 52-50. Samford would then go on a 15-2 run in the game’s next 5 minutes to extend their lead to 67-52. Auburn would go an 8-0 run with 5 points coming from Malone but it was too little too late for Auburn as the Tigers dropped their 2nd straight game to start the season.
Tomorrow at #20, we’ll go back to Bridgestone Arena, but not for a SEC Tournament game.
