Auburn Holds Steady at #8 in Fan Pulse

A matchup with #2 LSU looms

At first glance, it looks like not much is changing in the top 10 spots or so. Wisconsin fell to the bottom of the pack after dropping a really dumb game to Illinois, but other than that Georgia jumped Auburn (which... really?) and Florida jumped Notre Dame.

In actuality, though, things thinks are close to being shaken up. After having a strangle hold on first place, Alabama’s lackadaisical win over Tennessee (and the loss of Tua for at least one game) ended with the Tide ceding several first place votes to other teams. Down from 45 of 50 last week, Alabama now claims a slight majority with 29 first place votes. LSU, the clear-cut #2 according to you fans, claimed 15 first place votes, while Clemson and Ohio State each nabbed three. Each of the four teams picked up their own fans’ vote.

My favorite vote is without a doubt From the Rumble Seat (Georgia Tech) sinking UGA down to #15. Kudos, Techies. I can only aspire to reach your levels of pettiness towards the lesser school to your east.

The biggest disagreement this week is what to do with Texas. If you ask Rutgers(?) fans over at On the Banks, this Longhorns team is #11 in the country. Most other sane ballots have the Horns at around #15/#16, but that awful showing against Kansas has them as low as #19 in four different ballots.

The further we get into the season, the more voters are buying into teams with undefeated records. App State (6-0) rose five spots from #24 up to #19, Baylor (7-0) rose four spots from #21 up to #17, Minnesota (7-0) rose a spot from #15 to #14 (they played Rutgers, so that’s fair), and SMU (7-0) rose four spots from #17 to #13. The schedule is going to begin to really get tough for SMU, Minnesota, and Baylor the next few weeks, but if they keep winning, they’ll keep climbing. I’m all for non-traditional powers forcing college football fans and media to actually have thoughtful conversations about team quality, so hopefully those guys keep winning.
