13 Days to Tip-Off - Chris Denson

Today, we look back at another Auburn vs LSU hoops matchup.

The Decatur Daily

For the 2nd time this week, we look back at a game that took place in Baton Rouge. We looked at a game from K.T. Harrell in 2015 on Sunday, but today we go back to Auburn’s previous visit to the Bayou to see Chris Denson put up 29 against the Bayou Bengals. This Tigers team came into Baton Rouge on a 3 game winning streak but unfortunately the winning streak would end at 3.

Total Points: 29

Date: February 8, 2014

Opponent: at LSU

Final Score: LSU 87 Auburn 80

A lot of the games that we’ve done over this countdown has been instances where a player has gotten hot from behind 3-point range. This is not one of those games.

Chris was 11-23 from the field, just 1-4 from 3-point range and 6-10 from the free throw line. He also added 6 rebounds in addition to his 29 points. It took Auburn 2:07 to score in this one but Denson’s layup got Auburn in the scoring column. He would make a jumper 90 seconds later to help Auburn get out to a 6-1 lead. The lead would grow to 8 moments later as Denson’s dunk with 14:55 left gave Auburn an 11-3 lead. Denson wouldn’t score again until 7:39 left in the 1st half but he would score 9 straight for Auburn. Over the next 3 minutes, including the previous basket mentioned, Denson would make 3 layups and a 3-pointer to put Auburn back 24-22. Denson would make 2 more baskets to close out the half, including a layup with 28 seconds left to give Auburn a 33-32 halftime lead. Denson would lead all scorers with 19 points in the 1st half.

In the 2nd half, Denson wouldn’t score for almost 9 minutes as LSU would build a 7 point lead. His jumper with 11:18 left would pull Auburn within 55-50. Denson would split a pair of free throws with 10 minutes remaining but LSU was still up 10. Denson would make 5 more free throws over the last 10 minutes of the game and his only basket would come with 32 seconds left to make it 82-77 LSU. But 5 was as close as Auburn could get late as LSU made their free throws late to preserve an 87-80 win.

Tomorrow at #12, I’ll talk about a player who hasn’t been featured on this countdown yet so come back to see who that guy is!
