6 Days to Tip-Off - Chris Denson

Denson and KT Harrell combined for 56 points in a 2014 victory over Mississippi State.

Auburn Tigers

So this is the 2nd time that we have talked about this game on the countdown. Earlier in the countdown, we looked at K.T. Harrell’s 26 point outing against the Bulldogs. While 26 is an impressive scoring line, he wasn’t the leading scorer that night.

Chris Denson went off for 30 points as Harrell and Denson combined for 56 of Auburn’s 92 points that Saturday in Auburn. It’s crazy to believe that Auburn scored 92 points and made just 3 3-pointers in the game AND of Harrell and Denson’s 56 points, they combined to make only 1 3-pointer. While the Tigers were 3-13 from the 3-point line, they won this game by shooting 37-41 from the free throw line. Yes, that’s correct 37-41 from the free throw line. The Bulldogs shot 29-36 so this game was certainly a foul-fest.

Total Points: 30

Date: February 15, 2014

Opponent: Mississippi State

Final Score: Auburn 92 Mississippi State 82

Denson was 10-17 from the field, all of his shots from 2-point range. He was 10-11 from the free throw line and he did this in just 26 minutes of action. Denson also had 7 rebounds in this game.

Denson’s first basket came at the 16:12 mark, a layup to make it 8-6 Miss State. Denson made 2 free throws 2 minutes later but came out of the game after picking up 2 fouls. Denson would sit for 9 minutes before returning with 2:30 left in the half as Auburn had built a 32-25 lead. Denson scored the last 6 points of the half for Auburn, converting a 3-point play and making 3 free throws in the last minute of the half as Auburn led 40-25 at halftime.

In the 2nd half, Denson got his half going after following up a missed layup with a tip-in to put Auburn up 49-33. Denson’s next basket was one for the highlight reels (1:42 in the below video).

Denson’s driving one hand jam put Auburn up 53-35 as the Tigers would build a 21 point lead early in the 2nd half. Denson continued to have his way in the paint making another layup with 14 minutes left. Denson would make 2 free throws and a jumper around the midway point of the half to make it 62-45 Auburn.

The Bulldogs made a run to cut the lead down to single digits but back to back baskets, the 2nd becoming a 3-point play from Denson, put Auburn back up 14 at 69-55 with 6:42 to go.

Denson made a jumper with 4:24 to go that put Auburn up 75-58. As the Bulldogs got within 9 late, Denson converted yet another 3-point play with 1:57 left to put Auburn up 82-70. From there, Auburn made their free throws down the stretch to close the Bulldogs out and win by 10.

That’s all of the 30 point games we have on this countdown. Tomorrow at #5, we will begin looking at 31 point games and all of these games coming up, thinking back on them, were fun to be at.
