Writer’s Note: I mentioned yesterday we would go back to 2012-2013 today but I’ve pushed that one back to later in the week.
So with that said, #29 on our countdown comes from the 2015 Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu held at Christmas. Auburn traveled to Hawaii to play in Hawaii’s annual Christmas Tournament. Auburn played New Mexico, Harvard and the host team, Hawaii, during their stay on the islands. The Tigers went 1-2 in the event but today’s countdown game is the 1 on that list. Kareem Canty had a big game against the New Mexico Lobos, who Auburn will face in the Legends Classic in Brooklyn on November 25th.
Total Points: 27
Date: December 22, 2015
Opponent: New Mexico
Final Score: Auburn 83 New Mexico 78
In 33 minutes, Canty was 9-21 from the field, 5-14 from 3-point range and 4-4 from the free throw line and also had 7 assists. Canty’s first points of the game didn’t come until a little more than 12 minutes in with a 3-pointer that gave Auburn a 25-23 lead. He and Jordon Granger would connect on another 3 during this 9-0 run to give Auburn a 31-23 lead. Canty had a steal and layup in the final 40 seconds of the half to go to the locker room with 8 first half points. Auburn led 41-36 at halftime.
In the 2nd half, Canty hit a couple layups and a 3-pointer in the 1st 6 minutes of the half. Auburn would go 4 minutes without a basket Canty’s 3 gave them a 58-55 lead but Canty hit a huge 3 to end an 11-2 Lobos run that had seen them build a 66-60 lead midway through the 2nd half. Auburn would get the lead back, 72-71, with 4:20 left on a Canty layup. His final basket of the game was a big one. Up 76-75 and time winding down, Canty held the ball as the clock winded down and late in the shot clock, drilled a 3-pointer to put Auburn up 4 with 26 seconds left. Canty would help T.J. Dunans trap New Mexico on the next possession and Dunans threw an alley-oop to Cinmeon Bowers to finish off the Lobos that morning/afternoon in Hawaii.
Side note: I LOVE these pregame and postgame speeches from Bruce in the highlight videos!
Tomorrow at #28, we’ll talk about a big game against an in-state rival in 2017!
