Auburn needs players in the 2020 class that can immediately make an impact next season at the offensive tackle position. That’s why the staff targeted about every top JUCO offensive tackle imaginable. Of them all, 3* OT Kilian Zierer seemed the least likely to land with the Tigers earlier this summer. He took an official visit to the Plains during Big Cat Weekend but the belief was he would stay out west at UCLA. But then out of the blue, he shocked everyone announcing his pledge to the Tigers. Today, he’s officially signing with Auburn.

A German native, Zierer only recently started even playing football. He had only one year of experience before arriving at College of the Canyon and in just a short time morphed into a bone fide D1 player and JUCO All-American. That lack of experience means there is probably still plenty more for him to learn but it also means the upside is tremendous.
He’s got an NFL frame and could easily play at 310 lbs without losing a step. Zierer possesses plenty of natural strength and can be violent at the point of contact. He still has to get more consistent with his pad level and hand placement, something that shouldn’t come as a surprise for such an inexperience player. But the raw tools are obvious and given more reps he’s only going to get better.
Unfortunately, he won’t be able to participate in spring practice due to an ACL injury. He will, however, enroll early so will at least be on campus to soak up the playbook and get mental reps. I think it’s unlikely he will earn a starting spot this season given he probably won’t be full go until fall camp but it wouldn’t shock me if he eventually worked his way into that 6th OL role for the Tigers in 2020. Excited to watch this kid develop.
War Eagle Kilian!
