For much of this cycle 4* TE J.J. Pegues has had the Tigers atop his leaderboard. When Ole Miss fired Matt Luke it felt like maybe that was the final piece to finish this thing off for Auburn. But the always lurking Crimson Tide had something to say about...
Nick Saban’s staff made a strong late push when it became clear they were going to be on the outside looking in for 5* Darnell Washington. Considering Auburn had been Pegues’s leader for so long but hadn’t been able to get him to pull the trigger, it felt like maybe he had been waiting on the green light from the Tide. But AU was able to withstand the push and landed a big time boom this morning.

Calling Pegues a unique athlete doesn’t feel like doing him complete justice. At 6’3” 285 lbs, he looks like a defensive lineman. But he moves and plays more like he’s 6’1” 220 lbs with the ball in his hands. He can do a little of everything from lining up as a tight end in a pro style set, to taking carrying the ball out of the backfield, to catching the ball down field, to setting the end or even sacking the QB. The mixture of his size and athleticism makes him fascinating prospect that Auburn could use in many different ways. My guess is his future is at the 3-back role and you will see him drop his weight to more the 260 lb range. Given what AU has lost at that position from last year, he very well could see some early playing time in 2020.
This is exactly how Auburn was hoping to start the day. With some other big decisions coming down the line getting some positive momentum going is big. Even more important though is beating your instate rival for a big time athlete. Make no mistake, Alabama WANTED this kid and thought last night they might have had him.
Stay tuned as 4* LB Desmond Tisdol is primed to make his decision at the top of the next hour.
