As we continue our march to kickoff, we take a look at the top 100 recruits to sign with Auburn of all-time*. The rankings are based on 247’s composite recruit rankings, which unfortunately only date back to 2000.
One of the big recruiting successes after the Kick Six was Kalvaraz Bessent. One of the top 10 players in the state of Georgia, Bessent was an early Bama commit, verbally committing to the Tide in March of 2013. This looked like a pretty stable commitment until Auburn scored an unofficial visit from the cornerback for the 2013 Iron Bowl. Bessent flipped his verbal from Alabama to Auburn 10 days later, and it’s hard not to think it was in large part to his visit to the Plains.
Before the ink had even dried on Bessent’s NLI, Bessent was in legal trouble. On February 7th, Bessent and three others were stopped for speeding and arrested when the police officer found 8 ounces of marijuana in the vehicle, as well as a gun. After the marijuana problems and legal troubles of the Chizik era documented earlier in this countdown, it was easy to assume Bessent was never stepping foot on the Auburn campus.
Malzahn gave the kid a chance, though, and let Bessent come in and redshirt his freshman year. Almost exactly one year later, though, Bessent left the program, supposedly to be closer to his two kids. The internet tells me at some point he ended up at Eastern Arizona Junior College, but it’s I can’t confirm this and it’s unclear if he ever played football there.
