Well this is quite the shocker! 4* S Chris Thompson Jr has long been thought to be a Longhorn lean. However, AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr started reporting early this past week that Auburn actually felt like this was a 50/50 race they had a shot at winning. Most people, myself included, still though that even if this race was a bit tighter, Thompson would elect to stay instate and attend Texas. Thompson had other plans.
I cannot understate how big a win on the recruiting trail this is for Auburn’s staff, specifically Wesley McGriff. Thompson has long been at the top of Auburn’s safety board and they had him on campus for an official visit earlier this spring. It just seemed unlikely that Texas would lose a kid from their backyard that they had been recruiting for 2 years. But the allure of the SEC along with the chance to see the field early was enough to sway Thompson to the Plains.
Thompson is a thumper with NFL size. He’s at his best coming downhill to fill the alley. In fact, some have wondered if he will outgrow the safety position and end up a linebacker at the next level. Personally, I think he’s safety all the way. In fact, he reminds me a lot of Jamien Sherwood coming out of high school. My guess is you will see him backing up Sherwood in 2020. This is an early impact player on the backend.
Well how about this DB class now? Auburn entered the month of August with 0 secondary commits. They now have two form 4* calibre prospects who look likely to make an impact early on the Plains. What really stands out is the size Auburn is adding to its secondary. If they can get JUCO 4* CB Brian George as well that’s three 6’2” athletes on the backend. Also keep an eye on 4* S Ladarius Tennison, 4* CB Ethan Pouncey and 4* CB Kendall Dennis as all serious options to land with the Tigers at some point. This is gonna be a REALLY good DB class.
War Eagle Chris!
