Whomever leads Auburn’s football program needs help in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Big athletes capable of developing into formidable SEC talents.
That’s exactly why Auburn just snagged 3-star DL Ian Mathews.
Mathews has been on Auburn’s radar for sometime. Before Malzahn’s firing it was assumed that he was a possible backup for Lee Hunter but after Gus was let go, Mathews became a legit target. The Columbus, GA native chose the Tigers over Georgia Tech. He’s Auburn’s first commitment and only signee from the state of Georgia in 2021.
Mathews is a big kid at 6’5” 290 lbs. He’s also a tremendous athlete who not only sees time on both sides of the ball for his high school program but also plays basketball. It’s not often you see DL prospects running wheel routes and catching 50/50 balls. Mathews will need some time in Auburn’s conditioning program but he’s got the skillset to help the Tigers at a number of positions. He could grow into a defensive tackle, play outside on the edge or flip to offensive tackle. Personally, I think his best upside is on the offensive side of the ball and it wouldn’t shock me to see Mathews starting on Auburn’s offensive line in the not too distant future.
War Eagle Ian!
