THANK YOU SENIORS: Samir Doughty

Let’s look back at Samir’s 5 best scoring games of his Auburn career!

NCAA Basketball: Louisiana State at Auburn Marvin Gentry-USA TODAY Sports

This week, I want to take this opportunity to thank each of the seniors that contributed greatly to the success of the Auburn Basketball program. I really hoped we would celebrating their run through their 3rd consecutive NCAA Tournament but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be. If you know me, I like countdowns and I thought it would be a great idea to look back at some of these senior’s best games in an Auburn uniform. We’re gonna start with this year’s leading scorer: Samir Doughty.

Thank you Samir for coming to Auburn! We are definitely going to miss your confidence and the swagger you brought to the team on a nightly basis.

Samir’s Auburn Career

Junior: 7.3 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 43% 3-point shooter

Senior: 16.7 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 33.5% 3-point shooter

Samir began his career at VCU where he played for 2 seasons for now LSU coach Will Wade. Samir transferred to Auburn before the start of the 2017-2018 season and sat out that season. Last season, Samir played a key role off the bench behind Jared Harper and Bryce Brown and had a knack for making big shots in big situations. One of the shots I’ll never forget was his 3-pointer late in the Tennessee game in Auburn Arena. It was my last home game there as a student and when Samir made that shot, I knew we were gonna win that game.

Samir had a much bigger role this season taking over the primary 2 guard duties as well as the backup PG role. Doughty led the team in scoring this season and had several games where he put the team on his back including in his final game in Knoxville making a career high 8 3-pointers.

Here are Samir’s Top 5 Scoring Performances of his Auburn Career:

5. 24 points - 12/19/19 vs N.C. State

Auburn needed all of Samir’s 24 points in this one, a 79-73 win over the Wolfpack. Samir was 6-12 from the field, 3-5 from 3, and 9-12 from the free throw line. Like he did against Tennessee in March 2019, Doughty made another shot to tell another team “Night Night!!”

4. 25 points - 3/4/20 vs Texas A&M

This is the only game on this list in which Auburn lost and unfortunately for Samir, it was his last home game too. Auburn only lost 3 times in his 2 years on the court at Auburn Arena. Samir was 5-12 from the field, with all 5 of his baskets being 3s and was 10-11 from the free throw line.

3. 26 points - 2/28/20 vs LSU

What will forever be known as the “Samir Shimmy” game to me. Samir was 10-19 from the field, including 5-11 from 3. Auburn was down big late and many people LSU had this game won. But J’Von McCormick’s 3-point barrage helped get Auburn to overtime and then Samir took over. Doughty made multiple 3s in OT, the final one led to this...

2. 32 points - 3/7/20 at Tennessee

Talk about going out on a high note! 2 of Samir’s 5 highest scoring performances came during the final week of the season. Samir made a career high 8 3-pointers against the Vols and had an answer for every Tennessee run. Samir made his 8 3s on 13 attempts, and was 10-19 overall from the field.

1. 33 points - 11/15/19 vs Cal State Northridge

This game was a blowout, sorely needed after the nailbiter at South Alabama but Samir made sure to put this game away early. Samir was 10-15 from the field, 6-8 from 3 and made all 7 free throws. He also had 8 rebounds in this contest. Samir had 22 points, a new career-high at that point, by halftime, part of a 116-70 barrage over the Matadors.

If you remember my preseason Countdown to Tip-Off and now add this year to the mix, Samir would have made the list on 4 occasions, as he accumulated 4 25+ point games.

Thanks again Samir for being an Auburn Tiger and I know the Auburn family will always have your back!

Tomorrow, we’ll look back upon another one of our seniors.
