For the third straight time this cycle, Auburn has landed a big time offensive commit from the state of Texas. It started with 4* Dematrius Davis’s pledge last month. A week later, 4* Jaeden Roberts committed to the Tigers. Today, Auburn’s success plucking big time talent out of the Lone Star State continues with 3* TE Landen King’s commitment to the Tigers.
King is a former Texas commit who holds offers from the likes of Alabama, Georgia, Texas A&M, Washington and many others. Only two weeks after King’s initial pledge to the Longhorns he decided to back out of that pledge. The reason? When Davis committed to Auburn, King immediately contacted the staff to set up a virtual visit. The two are childhood friends and King reportedly was excited about the idea of playing with Davis at the next level. After that visit it was a matter of when not if King would join the class.
King is a long, versatile athlete who fits the new mold Chad Morris wants at the 3 position in his offense. Possessing outstanding hands and great hops, King excels as a redzone target in jump ball situations. His high school team uses him all over the field lining him up as a traditional H-Back one snap then isolating him on the perimeter the next. He will need to bulk up some to be effective as an inline blocker at the next level but it’s hard not to be excited about his athletic upside. King fits more in the mold of Sal Cannella or Tyler Fromm so don’t be surprised if he gets some work at the 5 or “Big Slot” position too.
Auburn’s invasion of Texas continues to be successful. With three Texans aboard in 2021, Auburn has already matched the number signed from that state last cycle and they don’t look likely to slow down any time soon. The Tigers are still hard after the likes of 5* OT Tommy Brockermeyer, 4* C James Brockermeyer, 4* OT Savion Byrd, 4* RB LJ Johnson, 4* WR Shadrach Banks and 3* RB Alton McCaskill.
While it continues to be reported that Auburn is likely to sign just one tight end in this class, I still think odds are pretty good the Tigers take a second if one of their top targets wants to commit. The Tigers are very much in it for 4* Michael Trigg, 4* Terrance Ferguson and 3* Gunner Helm. If any of those prospects wanted on board, it might be hard for Auburn to say no.
