Recruiting never stops. While the focus is squarely on the 2021 class, Auburn’s coaches are also constantly talking to 2022 recruits and beyond. Relationships started now are what can end up resulting in that huge commitment on signing day 1-3 years later. The Tigers already have two commits in the 2022 class and it wouldn’t shock me if they added another before the end of this year.
The one position programs love to get on board as soon as possible is the quarterback. With a top QB in place, it becomes so much easier to recruit other top offensive talent. Auburn is already seeing those benefits with Dematrius Davis in this year’s class.
Quarterback dominoes also have the tendency to fall earlier. The first of 2022 fell last week when Walker Howard, son of former LSU quarterback Jamie Howard, committed to his dad’s alma mater. Expect others to start falling in the coming months. So it feels like a good time to highlight some of Auburn’s top QB targets for 2022. Chances are good, Auburn’s quarterback in next year’s class will be one of these three names.
Morris was a break out star this past fall in Georgia. The rising junior threw for over 2,100 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2019 leading Carrollton to the GHSA AAAAA quarterfinals. His recruitment has since exploded landing 30+ offers to date. 247 has him ranked #41 overall in next year’s class and the #2 dual threat quarterback.
A 6’1’, 175 lb dual threat quarterback, Morris has tremendous upside. Morris thrives throwing the ball deep, displaying elite touch, effortlessly dropping the ball in the basket of downfield receivers. While not ultra productive as a rusher last season, he can absolutely hurt a defense with his feet. There’s a lot of Deshaun Watson in his tape so it doesn’t surprise me he’s become a top target for the Tigers. Georgia could be tough to beat in this race but Auburn is absolutely a major factor.
The son of UT-Martin’s head coach, Jason Simpson, Ty is one of the most electric playmakers in this class. The Tigers have surged in his recruitment recently hosting him on a virtual visit per AuburnUndercover’s Keith Niebuhr. LSU was believed to be one of Auburn’s top competitors but they just took their 2022 QB.
Simpson has one of the strongest arms in this class. Elusive in the pocket, Simpson excels at keeping plays alive while also continuously looking down the field to make a big play. As the son of a football coach, you would expect he also has a great understanding of the game. In all honesty, he reminds me a lot of Bo Nix when watching his tape. It’s hard to know who is #1 on Chad Morris’s board but Simpson is absolutely in that conversation. The Tigers reportedly love him and have made him a top priority in next year’s class.
This will be a very interesting recruitment to track. Bailey is an Auburn legacy who only recently just landed an offer from the Tigers. It came after a slew of other major offers rolled in this spring including Alabama, Georgia, Michigan, Tennessee and others.
Bailey’s a big time player with a big time arm. He threw for just shy of 2,500 yard last season and 25 touchdowns while dealing with an elbow injury. He’s kid likely to shoot up rankings after this fall. The big question is whether he fits Morris’s system. Auburn’s new offensive coordinator has focused mostly on dual threat quarterbacks since being hired. But Bailey is a talented kid whose dream has been to be an Auburn Tiger. If he decides he wants on board, it might be tough for Auburn to say no. The Tigers though will have some stiff competition with Alabama very much a factor in this race.
