January 28, 2017 - Fort Worth, Texas
It was quite the week leading up to this game for Auburn as the Tigers had beat Alabama by 20 on the previous Saturday. However, they had suffered a 29 point loss on the road at South Carolina as Auburn heading to Big 12 country to take on TCU in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge. Yesterday, we talked about Austin Wiley’s then career high of 19 points. That lasted only one week.
It was a high scoring 1st half for both teams as Auburn shot 54% while TCU shot 61% in the first half. Mustapha Heron set the tone early scoring 15 1st half points. Anfernee McLemore scored 8 in the 1st half making all 4 of his shots. Auburn led 45-43 at halftime.
The 2nd half belonged to Wiley.
The Tigers went to Austin early and often as the teams swapped the lead back and forth early in the 2nd half. Midway through the 2nd half, Auburn led 65-59 but the Tigers would take over.
A dunk from Wiley followed back by another bucket from McLemore put Auburn ahead by 10 at the Under-8 timeout. Off the timeout, McLemore would block TCU’s next shot and Dunans would convert on the other end to put Auburn up 12. A 3-point play by McLemore, a bucket by Heron, 2 free throws by Jared Harper would be capped off by a dunk from Wiley as a 15-0 run gave Auburn an 80-59 lead with 5:21 to go.
TCU would get it down to single digits with a minute to go, but a Wiley dunk would put the game on ice as the Tigers were able to hang on to improve to 3-0 against Big 12 teams on the season while winning their first ever game in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge.
Austin Wiley finished with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Mustapha Heron had 17 points while Anfernee McLemore each had 13 points.
Here are the highlights!
Tomorrow at #85, we get to talk about a SWEEEEEEP!
