Having fun yet?
National Signing Day is Wednesday but Auburn’s new coaching staff has decided to get the party started early. For the fourth time in three days and for the second time today, Auburn has a new commitment. 3-star JUCO LB Joko Willis just announced he plans on being an Auburn Tiger.
This is a dream come true for the Georgia native. Willis played high school ball at Troup County, same program as Kobe Hudson, but had to take the JUCO route following his 2019 season. He emerged as one of the top JUCO linebackers in the 2021 class, earning multiple SEC offers before committing to Kentucky. He and the Wildcats parted ways last week, likely due to UK emerging as the favorite for 4-star LB Trevin Wallace. With Wallace trending away from the Tigers, Auburn decided to pursue Willis and after verifying his academics were in order, offered the JUCO standout and landed his pledge this afternoon.
A twitchy, versatile athlete, Willis displays outstanding closing speed. Despite playing a little thin, Willis flashes the ability to shed blocks and work through traffic to make plays. He played the SAM for Independence but has the frame to grow into a weak side inside linebacker for the Tigers after a year of strength training. A great athlete, Willis can cover sideline to sideline making it likely he will be able to find a way onto the field early in his career.
The Tigers are building towards a solid finish for the 2021 recruiting cycle. This new staff is severely hampered in 2021 given the pandemic related recruiting restrictions and the fact that most of the current class has already signed. However, Harsin is making do with what’s available and closing on some solid prospects. Let’s see if the Tigers can win a few more battles down the stretch and get this class back into the top 20.
War Eagle Joko!
