Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#98 - Angelo Blackson, DT
Game - Auburn vs. Virginia (2011 Chick-fil-A Bowl), December 31, 2011
With a 35-24 lead in the 3rd quarter, Auburn punted and pinned the Cavaliers inside their own 10. On 3rd and 8, Gabe Wright nearly dropped Virginia’s Michael Rocco for a safety, but the ball was spotted at the UVA 1 yard line for fourth down. Virginia had already had one bust on punt protection that allowed walk-on Garrett Harper to block a punt in the second quarter. This time with a short snap back to the punter, they somehow missed the biggest Tiger on the field.
Auburn would turn the free kick into 3 more points and close the door on the Cavs, sending offensive coordinator Gus Malzahn to Arkansas State on a win.
We’re now 98 days until the start of the Harsin era! War Eagle!
