Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#95 - Pat Sims, DT
Game - Auburn vs. New Mexico State, September 22, 2007
Pat Sims was one of only 2 four-star recruits Auburn signed in the disastrous 2004 class that was wrecked by Jetgate. Thankfully, he wasn’t a bust. Sims was a rock in the middle of Auburn’s fantastic defenses of 2006 and 2007. Halfway through the first quarter against NMSU, cornerback Jerraud Powers and safety Zac Etheridge forced a fumble on a crossing route, and Sims picked up the loose football and took off for 6.
Before you ask, targeting was not a penalty in 2007.
This game is more likely remembered for being Kodi Burns’s first start at Auburn, but it was the last #95 to score for the Tigers that got Auburn on the board.
Note: You may notice that we “skipped” #96. That’s because no one, in all the history that we could find of Auburn football, has scored for Auburn while wearing that number. The current owner is holder/kicker Ben Patton. I suppose a fake field goal or extra point is in order to rectify that situation.
We will have another gap tomorrow, since we couldn’t find a #94 that scored either. Funny thing is, Sen’Derrick Marks came within just 2 yards of doing that in this very game.
