One of those moments when we knew it was Our Year

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#89 — Darvin Adams, WR

Game - Auburn vs. South Carolina (2010 SEC Championship Game), December 4, 2010

7 catches
217 yards
2 TDs
That was just the first half of the SEC Championship game for Darvin Adams. The most memorable of which is the last one. Which is saying something, because the first touchdown is on a hitch-and-go where he leaves future All-Pro Stephon Gilmore in his dust for a 54-yard touchdown.

But then there’s his other touchdown. After South Carolina cut Auburn’s lead in half right before the end of the second quarter, the Gamecocks decided to kick off short to Eric Smith rather than let Onterrio McCalebb burn them before the half. Smith returned the kick to the Auburn 41. Then Cam Newton hit Emory Blake on a short pass to the boundary to allow the shortest possible Hail Mary throw. Then Cam let it go

South Carolina never recovered from this one. They would miss a field goal on their first drive of the second half, then Auburn drove for a touchdown and immediately added another on a pick-6. The rout was on, and those of y’all that weren’t in the stadium started booking flights to Phoenix before the rest of us could get in front of a computer.

Current #89

Well, I felt pretty good about JJ Pegues scoring a touchdown...until he switch to defensive tackle during spring practice. Hey, maybe we’ll still bust out the WildPegasus and get him on the board.
