Not long after Cornelius Williams was named Auburn’s new wide receivers coach 3-star WR Jay Fair landed an offer from the Tigers. Since then, he’s been one of Auburn’s top WR targets in this 2022 class. After taking official visits to Auburn, Florida, and TCU this summer, Fair was ready to make his decision today.
And C-Will got his man.
This is a big win for Auburn’s young WR coach. Fair has long been viewed as a heavy TCU lean so for Williams to go into Texas and wrestle him away from Gary Patterson is a big deal. Fair also sports a really impressive offer list featuring Georgia, Miami, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, and plenty others.
Fair’s game is built on speed. The 5’10” 175 pound wideout is one of the fastest players in the 2022 class having clocked an official 40 yard dash at 4.39 and put up a blazing 10.5 in the 100 meters. That speed translates to the football field where he was a big play waiting to happen last fall catching 73 passes for 1,310 yards and 14 touchdowns. He did most of his damage on the outside where his speed allowed him to get on top of DBs and past safeties for big plays. However, he’s perfectly comfortable operating in traffic flashing the ability to make catches while being well covered. He’s also a smooth route runner and will have the versatility to play the Z (flanker) or H (slot) in Harsin’s offense.
Auburn is slowly building momentum on the trail. Two weeks ago they landed 3 straight commits in 3-star K Alex McPherson, 3-star TE Micah Riley-Ducker, and 3-star S Caleb Wooden. Two more targets have set commit dates for the near future with 4-star RB Damari Alston announcing on July 25th and 4-star DL Caden Story committing on August 1st. Both are projected to pick the Tigers. I am also keeping an eye on 3-stars S Ja’Kobi Albert, OL Drew Bobo, and DL Maxie Baudoin IV.
