Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#60 — David Williams, LB
Game — Auburn vs. UT-Chattanooga, September 21, 1979
Here’s what we know:
- Auburn won this game 52-7
- David Williams wore #60
- At some point, David Williams intercepted a pass and ran it back for a touchdown.
- There were nearly double the fans in attendance at this game versus the “home” opener the week before in Birmingham against Louisville, which led to Mark Murphy (yes, that Mark Murphy) to write in the Plainsman that Auburn should never play home games in Birmingham again.
That’s all I have. No one on the current roster is wearing #60, and the number has gone out of favor for anyone other than an offensive lineman, so this one might stand for a while.
