Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#24 — Ryan Davis, WR
Game — Auburn vs Purdue, December 28th, 2018
This game was one of the most unique viewing experiences I’ve ever had watching Auburn football.
On the Friday between the winter holidays, I was in the office “working”. Fresh out of school, I didn’t have any vacation days to spend, and after a disappointing end to the 2018 season, I figured I’d be content just listening to Rod and Stan call the game through my headphones. Of course, with nobody else in the building, it wasn’t terribly difficult to watch, either.
Watching the first half of this game, though, felt like an out of body experience. I abandoned any pretense of working after the third Boobee Whitlow touchdown in three drives, and was glued to this game until the walk-ons got in.
After posting a 56-7 halftime lead, Auburn effectively let off the brakes. The Tigers posted just one more touchdown in the second half, but that score is the reason we’re here today.
This was Ryan Davis at his best. Just get him the ball with some sort of space, and let him figure out the rest.
Davis would fair catch a punt on the last drive of the game, but this was effectively the career receptions leader’s final touch of his Auburn career. I don’t think there’s too many better ways to go out than “score a touchdown score your team’s sixty-second point of the day”.
The 2021 roster doesn’t have a #23 on offense, but it does have a prominent defender in the number. Roger McCreary actually was a weak targeting call away from housing a pick-six in last year’s opener against Kentucky, so it’s far from impossible he scores this year.
