What’s better than landing one blue chip player in a day? Landing two of course which is exactly what the Tigers have done on the trail today. Earlier, 4-star PG/S Tre Donaldson announced his intentions to be an Auburn Tiger. This evening, 4-star WR Omari Kelly did the same committing to the Tigers over Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, and UCF.
This has been a slow building recruitment. The Tigers didn’t seem to be a major factor earlier this year following the coaching change but things started trending AU’s way following a camp during June. Then Kelly made the trek down to the Plains for Big Cat Weekend and that appears to have sealed the deal.
Kelly is an intriguing prospect. He doesn’t necessarily posses a single elite trait that stands out but instead is a well rounded athlete capable of doing many things very well. He’s got good size at 6’2” 180 lbs, runs really good routes, has excellent hands and possesses enough speed to give defenses fits over the top. A number of programs, most notably UGA, like him on the defensive side of the ball at safety but the Tigers want him on offense where his skillset is a perfect fit for that Z or flanker spot in Harsin’s scheme.
Not a bad day for the Tigers adding two blue chip talents to the class. On July 1st, Auburn only had 3 commitments in the 2022 class. Now they are up to 11 and positioned well for the start of the 2021 season. New wide receivers coach Cornelius Williams is off to a strong start on the trail having landed his top slot target in Jay Fair and now keeping one of the best athletes in the state close to home. If he can snag 4-star WR Darrius Clemons in September, it’d be difficult to complain much about this WR class.
War Eagle Omari!
