Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.
#32 — Malik Miller, RB
Game — Auburn @ Alabama, November 24, 2018
This game wasn’t much fun. It felt like Auburn was stuck at arm’s length after a long touchdown run by Shaun Shivers was called back on a dubious holding penalty*. There was a small amount of hope right before halftime though, when Ryan Davis threw the 4th pass of his career...
Davis ended his Auburn career 3 of 4 with 3 touchdowns. That’s pretty efficient.
But this is not the day for Ryan Davis. This is Malik Miller’s day. Malik entered Auburn with plenty of fanfare. He was the between-the-tackles back for the Madison Academy teams that brought the first state football championships to the Huntsville area. The wingback for the Mustangs was a bit more heralded, but Malik was a big time player in his own right. He was never able to become the game-breaking runner for the Tigers after a few injuries early in his career, but Miller turned into a solid receiver out of the backfield and an excellent blocker in pass protection. This won him plenty of snaps in passing downs, which helped him be wide open on this throwback play.
#32 is currently held by walk-on wide receiver Trent Mason and sophomore linebacker Wesley Steiner. Given the great things Owen Pappoe had to say about Steiner at SEC Media Days, I don’t think it’s a stretch to say we could see the next score by 32 happen on a defensive or special teams play.
