Last day of the countdown. Tomorrow we have football.

Over the years, we’ve done different countdowns to kickoff (or tipoff). This year, we’re putting a twist on the classic “Best Auburn Player to Ever Wear Each Number” list. Football is all about lighting up the scoreboard in 2021, so let’s take a walk down memory lane and review the last time a player in each uniform number put up points.

#1 — Anthony Schwartz, WR

Game — Auburn vs. Tennessee, November 21, 2020

________________________________________________________________________________________________________

2020 was a weird season, and this game ended up turning into one of the weirdest due mainly to the timeline. Auburn demolished LSU on Halloween in the largest defeat in series history for either side, and then stood poised to take on Mississippi State shortly thereafter. That was before COVID happened, the MSU game got rescheduled to the final weekend of the season, and Auburn went 21 days between kickoff of the LSU game and the next opponent, Tennessee.

The Vols came into Jordan-Hare having won their most recent game against Auburn, one of the more embarrassing losses on the Gus Malzahn resume back in 2018, and the barged into JHS last November only to build a 10-0 lead as we played into the second quarter. Bo Nix had started poorly, and then worked himself into a rhythm. Facing a first down near midfield, Tennessee committed the cardinal sin of NOT covering Anthony Schwartz at all, and the fastest man in college football ran unabated down the field.

(Bonus alert: watch the rest of the clip for Smoke Monday’s 100-yard pick six as well!)

If we want to see another #1 score in 2021, then it’ll come from a new face as both quarterback T.J. Finley and safety Donovan Kaufman have donned the single digit jersey. We’re barely more than a day to kickoff, everyone. We made it. War Eagle!
