Auburn 4, Indiana State 0: Tigers open the Sunny Golloway era with a win

New, 8 comments

Auburn received good pitching and offensive success via Golloway's small-ball philosophy.

In his first collegiate at-bat, second baseman Damon Haecker singled to drive in Jordan Ebert, and Auburn never looked back. The Tigers used good pitching, defense and execution on offense to claim a 4-0 win over Indiana State on the first day of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Dillon Ortman picked up the win for Auburn, pitching well and getting out of a couple of jams in five innings. Ortman allowed five hits, struck out three and didn't give up a walk. Justin Camp, who is scheduled to start in the Tigers' home opener against Alabama State on Tuesday, came on in relief and picked up a four-inning save. Camp struck out two and gave up two hits and a walk.

With a 1-0 lead, Auburn stretched the advantage in the sixth and seven innings. In the top of the sixth, first baseman Keegan Thompson reached on an infield single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Daniel Robert. After third baseman Damek Tomsha was hit by a pitch and Ebert moved the runners into scoring position with another sac bunt, catcher Blake Austin, one of the team captains, drove in two with a single through the left side.

In the seventh, center fielder JJ Shaffer, filling in for the suspended Ryan Tella, led off with an infield single. Shaffer stole second and moved up to third on a groundout from shortstop Dan Glevenyak, and Thompson brought him home with a well executed safety squeeze.

In all, four true freshmen picked up their first hits in an Auburn uniform: Shaffer, Thompson, Haecker and right fielder Anfernee Grier. The Tigers stole four bases. Glevenyak and Grier each had one, and Shaffer swiped two.

Auburn returns to action Saturday morning at 11 a.m. CT against Ohio State. Senior left-hander Michael O'Neal is scheduled to take the mound for the Tigers, and junior lefty Ryan Riga is set to start for the Buckeyes.
