Auburn 7, Alabama A&M 3: Despite some sloppy play, Tigers bounce back

New, 3 comments

Auburn exorcised its offensive demons in the first inning, but the Tigers were relatively quiet after that.

After losing three of four games last week without much offensive production, Auburn came back with a 7-3 win over Alabama A&M Tuesday at Plainsman Park. The Tigers recorded a season-best 11 hits against the Bulldogs.

Auburn (4-4) got things going right off the bat. With runners at first and third and one out in the bottom of the first, Blake Austin hit a sacrifice fly to left, driving in Damon Haecker. Damek Tomscha followed that up with an RBI single to bring in Dan Glevenyak, and Keegan Thompson drove in Tomscha with an RBI double down the left field line. Daniel Robert and Jordan Ebert also added RBI singles in the inning. When it was over, the Tigers had five runs on six hits and one error.

While Auburn got off to a hot start, the final eight innings were fairly sloppy. Five runners were eliminated on the base paths, and another out was recorded due to batter interference. The two runs on five hits after the first were roughly equal to the Tigers' meager averages this season. In the field, Glevenyak committed three errors at shortstop. After playing error-free defense in his first six games, that's four errors in the last two for Yak.

Ebert led Auburn at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI. Anfernee Grier was also 2-for-3, and Ryan Tella was 2-for-4. Thompson was 1-for-3 and scored two runs.

True freshman Kevin Davis (1-0) earned the win in his first-career start. Davis allowed two runs on two hits and four walks, and he struck out one in three innings. Justin Camp pitched the next three and gave up one hit while picking up one strike out. Robby Clements, Jacob Milliman, Jay Wade and Trey Cochran-Gill went the final three innings and combined to allow one unearned run on two walks.

Auburn takes the field again Friday night against Presbyterian in the first of a three-game series. Senior right-hander Dillon Ortman is in line for the start at Plainsman Park, and first pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
