Damek Tomscha and Jordan Ebert continued their hot hitting, leading Auburn to a 6-1 win over Kennesaw State Tuesday evening at Stillwell Stadium in Kennesaw, Ga. It was the Tigers' fourth win in a row.
Ebert led off the game with a single through the left side and eventually came around to score on a sacrifice fly from Anfernee Grier. With a 1-0 lead and one out in the top of the third, Tomscha blasted his fourth home run of the season over the left field wall. All of the slugger's homers have come in the last six games. Auburn (10-6) extended the lead to 3-0 in the top of the fourth thanks to a Tomscha sac fly that drove in Damon Haecker, who reached on a leadoff walk.
The Tigers broke the game open in the sixth, and Ebert once again played a role in the action. With two outs and a 1-2 count, the left fielder singled to drive in two runs, and he advanced to third while another run scored on an error. The 6-0 advantage easily stood up over the final 3 1/2 innings.
Auburn put up 10 hits in the contest. Ebert was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI, and Tomscha was 2-for-4 with two extra-base hits, a run and two RBI of his own. Keegan Thompson was 2-for-4 and drove in a run, and Ryan Tella (1-for-4), Blake Austin (1-for-5) and Dan Glevenyak (1-for-3) each had a hit.
Tomscha's homer was his third in four games, and Ebert has three three-hit games over the same stretch.
It wasn't just a good offensive night for the Tigers. Four pitchers combined to hold the Owls, who entered the game with a .292 team batting average, to just one hit. Justin Camp (1-1) earned the win by giving up one unearned run on one hit and a walk in 6 2/3 innings. Camp struck out four. Terrance Dedrick, Jay Wade and Daniel Koger pitched the final 2 1/3 innings and combined to allow only one walk while striking out two. It was the second time this year Auburn has held an opponent to one hit.
Chris Erwin (1-1) took the loss for Kennesaw State (10-9), allowing two runs -- one earned -- on five hits and three walks in three innings.
The only real negative for Auburn was the defense. The Tigers committed a season-high five errors, but credit goes to the pitching staff for staying focused and not allowing the mistakes to cause much harm.
Auburn is back in action Wednesday night at home against Alabama State. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
