Samford 8, Auburn 1: Tigers on the verge of collapse

Auburn is playing its worst baseball heading into its toughest stretch of the year.

Auburn got off to a nice start Tuesday night against Samford, but it was all down hill from there. After the first inning, the Bulldogs dominated in an 8-1 win over the Tigers at Plainsman Park.

Auburn (19-11) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. After Jordan Ebert led off with a fly out to center, Damek Tomscha, Ryan Tella and Blake Austin put together three straight singles, with Austin driving in Tella from second to open the scoring. But the inning ended one batter later when Daniel Robert flied out to left and Tomscha was easily thrown out trying to tag and score.

After that, it was all Samford. In the top of the third, two hits, plus two Tomscha throwing errors, led to three unearned runs. Tomscha committed a fielding error in the fourth and Damon Haecker added another in the sixth, but the Bulldogs (17-11) were unable to capitalize. However, they broke the game open in the seventh.

With the bases loaded and two outs, Brandon Powell singled to right, driving in two runs. Another run came in one batter later on a Trey Cochran-Gill wild pitch. Just for good measure, Caleb Bryson homered to left center in the eighth, adding to the lopsided score.

Trey Wingenter (1-1) started and took the loss for Auburn, though he didn't pitch terribly. Wingenter gave up three runs -- all unearned -- on four hits and two walks while striking out seven. Justin Camp, Cochran-Gill and Reid Carter combined to give up the rest of the damage in two-plus innings. Jacob Milliman, Cole Lipscomb and Daniel Koger finished the game.

Cole Limbaugh (1-0) earned the win, allowing a run on five hits and one walk with three Ks in 4 1/3 innings.

The Tigers will have to find a way to bounce back quickly before a road trip to nationally ranked Ole Miss. Dillon Ortman is set to take the mound for Auburn Friday night in Oxford, and first pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. CT.
