Dillon Ortman started strong, and Keegan Thompson, normally Auburn's Saturday starter, finished the job in the Tigers' 2-1 win over Alabama Friday night at Sewell-Thomas Stadium.
Ortman (6-1) went seven-plus innings, allowing just one run on five hits. After he allowed a leadoff double in the eighth, head coach Sunny Golloway elected to forgo Auburn's sometimes shaky bullpen and brought Thompson in for his first relief appearance of his career. The freshman responded by striking out five and giving up one hit in two innings.
In the ninth, Thompson struck out Wade Wass and Austen Smith. He followed that up with a strikeout of Chance Vincent, but Vincent reached on a wild pitch. After Will Haynie singled to put the potential tying run at second and winning run at first, Thompson finished off his first save by inducing a fly out from Hunter Webb.
The Tigers' pitching staff has allowed one run in the last 18 innings.
Auburn (21-14, 6-7 SEC) managed just four hits off Crimson Tide ace Spencer Turnbull (4-2) and scored in only one inning. Connor Short drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the second, and Jordan Ebert ran out a bases-loaded infield single. However, the Tigers stranded three runners in the inning, the first of three times they would leave the bases loaded.
Damon Haecker was 2-for-3, and Ebert (1-for-5, one RBI) and Daniel Robert (1-for-3, one run) came through with Auburn's two other hits.
Turnbull took the loss for Alabama (22-11, 8-5), despite seven strong innings. He allowed two runs on the four hits and two walks while striking out six. Nick Eicholtz pitched the final two innings, giving up one walk and striking out one.
Auburn and Alabama return to action Saturday night. Thompson was scheduled to start for the Tigers, but Sunday starter Michael O'Neal will likely take the hill.
