Auburn pro day results: Dee Ford, Chris Davis excel in front of NFL scouts

Dee Ford may have cemented himself as a first-round pick.

A couple of weeks after the NFL Scouting Combine, Auburn held its pro day on Tuesday, giving former Tigers a last chance to impress scouts. For the most part, it was a smashing success for those involved.

Dee Ford was the big winner on Tuesday. Ford couldn't participate at the Combine due to injury, but he did take a bold shot at fellow defensive end Jadeveon Clowney, who is viewed as one of the best players in the draft class.

"I'm better [than Clowney]," Ford said. "Let's put it like this. People like to talk about size all the time. Size is pretty much overrated in my eyes.

"You can look at guys like Robert Mathis, Elvis Dumervil, Von Miller. These are 6-2 guys and under. People are just looking at the fact that [Clowney] is a physical specimen. Honestly if you watch the film, he plays like a blind dog in a meat market basically."

He might not have completely proved that statement, but his pro day results compare favorably to Clowney's numbers from the Combine.

Height Weight 40 255 Bench Vertical Broad
Ford 6'2 5/8 244 4.53 29 35 1/2" 10'4
Clowney 6'5 266 4.53 21 37 1/2" 10'4

Clowney has much better size, but Ford showed he is just as athletic as the former South Carolina star, and at least in this comparison, he's stronger, too. No one's predicting the ex-Tiger to jump ahead of Clowney, but he may have earned a first-round selection. Ford is currently projected to go in the mid-20s, according to NFLDraftScout.com. In his latest Mock Draft, which was posted the day before Auburn's pro day, SB Nation's Matthew Fairburn projected Ford to go 38th overall -- the sixth selection of the second round. Dan Kadar posted his last Mock Draft on Feb. 24, and he didn't have Ford going in the first round. That's likely changed after pro day.

Chris Davis also made his case on Tuesday. Like Ford, he missed the majority of the Combine due to injury, only participating in the bench press (15 reps at 225 pounds). At Auburn's pro day, Davis showed he has the necessary physical attributes to play corner in the NFL. Among players listed as DBs, Davis' bench performance tied for 13th best, but his vertical on Tuesday would have ranked second at his position and fifth overall. He's projected to be a mid-round pick in May.

Jay Prosch and Blake Poole impressed, as well. Prosch showed his strength on the bench press, and pool put up a blazing time in the 40. Neither have high draft stocks, but both have certain qualities desired by NFL teams. Greg Robinson didn't participate, but he weighed in five pounds lighter than he was at the Combine. He's almost certainly going to be a top-five pick. Tre Mason ran the three-cone drill in
