Auburn football recruiting: Class of 2014 update as National Signing Day draws near

Where do the Tigers stand regarding the current recruiting?

Kevin C. Cox

Everyone has been talking about the commitment of coveted five-star running back Roc Thomas and whether Auburn should be worried about him possibly being interested in/flipping to Alabama. New 'Bama offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin visited Oxford High School this week in attempt to talk to Thomas and gain his interest. There have been rumors floating around that Thomas purposely came to school late so that he wouldn't have to meet with Kiffin. Thomas' head coach at Oxford told Kiffin that he was wasting his time and that Roc was 100 percent committed to Auburn. We do know that Thomas visited with running backs coach Tim Horton later that same day and had an in-home visit from OC Rhett Lashlee. Auburn doesn't seem worried about Thomas wavering, and all signs point to the back signing with the Tigers come February.

Top linebacker target Rashaan Evans is visiting Alabama this weekend -- during Auburn's biggest official visitor weekend before National Signing Day. The coaches are a little worried about Evans not getting to spend time with the majority of the other top targets and commits, but Evans has formed a great friendship with five-star commits Tre Williams and Thomas. Evans will take his official to Auburn next weekend, and I would look for Williams and Thomas to travel to the Plains to spend time with him. Williams worked on Evans all week at practice before the Under Armour All-America Game and has turned into a big-time recruiter for Auburn when it comes to Evans. There have been rumors circling for a while that Evans has been telling coaches and other top players that he is headed to Auburn. The Tigers will get the last word with Evans, and right now it would be a surprise if Evans signed with anyone besides Auburn.

Top dual-threat quarterback Treon Harris has emerged on Auburn's radar as of late, the Tigers Auburn seems to be targeting him as an athlete. Sean White is a top priority for Auburn, and the Tigers don't want to make him uncomfortable by recruiting another top guy at QB. Harris is currently committed to Florida State, as the Seminoles promised him a chance at QB. Miami recently offered him at QB after offering him only as an athlete early on in the recruiting process. It will be interesting to see how much truth Harris thinks there is to Miami's offer at QB, and also if he thinks he a legit shot at cracking FSU QB depth chart. Harris doesn't really fit the mold of a Jimbo Fisher quarterback, but it's still likely he winds up in Tallahassee. Harris has set up and official visit to Auburn for next weekend, and he is definitely intrigued by playing in Gus Malzahn's offense if he thinks he doesn't have a real shot at playing QB at FSU or Miami. Harris is a longshot now, but if his official goes well, things could get interesting leading up to Signing Day.

Big Official Visit Weekend

Auburn has at has least 15 official visitors this weekend that we know of, maybe more. We're trying to track down a full list of the guys who actually made it to campus, and should have one later Saturday/early Sunday.

We know that top commits Thomas, Williams and White will be on campus, along with top targets four-star defensive end Andre Williams and four-star offensive tackle Braden Smith. Auburn has made the cornerback position a top priority for this year's recruiting class, and all three commits are scheduled to be on campus: Kalvarez Bessent, Stephen Roberts and Nicholas Ruffin. All three seem to be firmly committed to the Tigers, and a good official visit will all but lock up those three to Auburn on Signing Day.

There are plenty of other big-time official visitors this weekend and we're working to confirm those guys. Should have an update no later than Saturday evening, along with guys who were no-shows, if any. This will be Auburn's biggest official visit weekend before Signing Day and will have a huge affect on how the Tigers put the icing on an already stellar recruiting class.
