Devan Barrett has been committed to Auburn since July 21st. He’s been listed as a hard commit the whole time and in spite of some late visits (he officially visited Tennessee a few weekends back) and pursuit by teams like Clemson, he stuck with his pledge to the Auburn Tigers.
Just how sought-after was Barrett? Well, take a gander at his offer list from his 247Sports profile. 11 of the 14 programs in the SEC offered him.
If it weren’t for his never really wavering from Auburn, Barrett’s signature would be one of those people anxiously await the announcement for on national TV. Instead, his signature came across the wire with relatively little fanfare, and he’s joined the numerous big-time backs to want to run in a Gus Malzahn / Tim Horton offense.
I was a huge fan of Barrett’s when he committed to Auburn back in July. Just look at his highlights and you’ll see why. As I noted in that commitment article: he doesn’t really have any wasted movements. He sees a hole, he hits the hole.
Will Barrett see the field next year? I have no idea. His talent is hard to deny. However, there are a ton of really good backs on Auburn’s team this coming season. Can he break through into the rotation? I suspect it will take injuries - which I really hope don’t happen - but you never know.
Either way, I’m glad to have Devan on board. Perhaps we can have a Barrett and Barrett backfield in a year or two? Welcome to the Plains! War Eagle!
