Three Star Safety Carlito Gonzalez Signs With Auburn

One of the Tigers oldest commitments sticks with the 2017 class.

Carlito Gonzalez

There are only two people signing with Auburn today who have been a part of this class longer than Carlito Gonzalez, and those are Calvin Ashley and Alaric Williams. Now, after well over a year and with Auburn being on the third defensive back coach since his commitment, Gonzalez is officially a Tiger.

Gonzalez’s recruitment really is an example of how crazy recruiting can be. First offered by Will Muschamp and Travaris Robinson, he stuck with the class when those two left and Auburn hired Kevin Steele and Wesley McGriff. Then McGriff departed for Ole Miss and Auburn hired Greg Brown.

If you want to see what we had to say about him when he committed in August of 2015, check out his original commitment article!

The Tigers have players to replace at Safety with Rudy Ford and Josh Holsey departing. Tray Matthews decided to return for his senior season, though, so it’s safe to bet he’ll have a primary spot in the rotation. We’ve seen Auburn being more than willing to play (and even start) freshmen defensive backs over the last two seasons at cornerback. Will they do the same at Safety?

I suspect Gonzalez will see the field in some capacity in these games. I don’t know that he’ll get a lot of playing time though unless he turns out to be something really special. I know I wouldn’t complain if that turns out to be the case!

Welcome to the Plains, Carlito. We’re glad you stuck with the class! War Eagle!
