Gus Malzahn met with the media before Saturday's game with Georgia. See what he had to say! All credit to the beat writers who were there.

Most of this press conference seemed to be injury updates from what I can see. So, to whit:

Sean White: Still banged up, will be careful with him at practice, but he will still start.

Tony Stevens: No idea of health level, but he'll play against UGA.

Tre Williams: No idea of health level, but he'll play against UGA.

Kamryn Pettway: "leg injury," hope to get him on the practice field, and may still play.

I take that to mean it's unlikely we see Kam Pettway, but we'll see. One thing I am curious about, though, is Malik Miller. He was supposedly going to be back by UGA if needed (though we wanted to redshirt him). If he's healthy, could we see him play if needed? I doubt it, but it's a thought.

The rest is about how well Josh Holsey and Montravius Adams have played, as well as mentioning the carryover in defensive styles from Alabama to Georgia now that Kirby Smart is the head coach. That's not necessarily a bad thing since Malzahn tended to find success against Alabama's defenses when the offense was clicking.

And now, to the Tweets!

Auburn got all Vandy had, and then some.

There were so many things to be surprised about in Auburn’s 23-16 escape over Vanderbilt. I had written this game off. I figured Vandy would hang around for a half because they pretty much do that with everyone. But Auburn, much to our surprise, came into this game with lots of injuries. I read a couple rumors about Sean not practicing the week before. But Phillip Marshall at 24/7 quelled those rumors. Phillip Marshall now has the street cred of Bagdad Bob.

Another surprise was how well Vandy played. Though it probably shouldn't have been. They have the conference's leading running back and arguably the nation's best linebacker. They had basically 2 weeks to prepare for Auburn, if not three. And it showed.

Auburn looked like a team fighting to find emotion in a sandwich game. After a tough road win in Oxford and a tough road game against a rival coming up in Athens, our thought was "just get through this." In the end Auburn did, and that is all that really matters.

We won’t score any style points in this ballgame. Auburn struggled to find itself without Sean White calling plays. JFIII was fine in spots, but you can tell he can’t read coverages yet. It was one read for him, then take off and run. White, on the other hand, knows where to go with the ball before the ball is snapped. That was very evident Saturday.

Defensively, Auburn has an Achilles exposed a bit. The intermediate pass is open for teams, or at least they have been for the last 2 weeks now. Chad Kelly carved us up. I expected that to a certain extent.

I did not expect a quarterback completing a little over half his passes to do the same. Lots of things played into this.

First was Vandy’s ability to establish a little run game in the first half. Then Auburn found itself playing without its two starting linebackers. Tre Williams due to injury. DeShaun Davis due to stupidity.

Yeah, yeah. I know. It was a clean play and he didn’t hit the guy in the head, but when you turn yourself into a missile to hit a guy in the chest with your head down like he did, you’re asking for targeting and ejection. You just are. I didn’t like the call against Williams vs LSU. I had no problem with this one. Those type calls are as much to protect the guy making the hit as much as the guy being hit. Live and learn is all I can say.

In the end, Auburn played solid enough in the second half on both sides of the ball to earn a win against a team that had nothing to lose coming off a bye week. Remember what Auburn did coming off a bye week?

My biggest concern now is what happens with the running game. Can Pettway go? My guess is no if this is a hamstring injury. Depending on the severity, we’ll be luck to see him back for the Iron Bowl, and that makes this game against Georgia more of a challenge.

At 100%, Kerryon doesn’t make the offense go like Kam. At 80%, Auburn will have to rely more on Sean White, who had about as much zip on the ball Saturday as Chris Todd circa 2009.

So yes, there are reasons to worry about Auburn’s trip to Athens. The Tigers are beat up and banged up, and they haven’t won there since 2005. But I still think Auburn gets the W this weekend. UGA is rudderless right now. They played better against Kentucky, but their offensive line is garbage. They have a freshman quarterback and head coach. Both have looked lost at times this year.

So, don’t read too much into the Tigers squeaking by Vanderbilt. It happens in this conference. At the end of the day, a top 10 team survived another SEC game. We’re moving on to Georgia.

John Reed-USA TODAY Sports

I didn't get to watch the game until late Saturday night, but here's my review!

Every team is going to have tight games at some point. Plenty of teams are going to have very tight games against teams they absolutely shouldn't struggle against.

Make no mistake about it, Vanderbilt has one of the better defenses in the conference. They have one of the best running backs in the conference. Auburn still should have handled them without too much of an issue, but when the Tigers play a full half without the starting quarterback while also missing the leading receiver and two linebackers for basically the entire game, then the dynamic of any game will change.

So things go. Auburn caught a Vandy team that could still make a bowl game in an 11am kickoff in front of a sluggish crowd and just managed to get out of the game with a win. It shouldn't have been that way. It shouldn't have been that way, but the play of superstar linebacker Zach Cunningham gave the Commodores a chance even at the end.

Let's get to some observations:

1) Holy Holding, Batman. For two weeks in a row, Auburn's defensive line (and Carl Lawson in particular) has been held so egregiously at times that it defies belief. On Vandy's first drive coming out of the timeout, Lawson had a burst up the middle and was past the offensive lineman when I saw him stopped in his tracks and pulled back. At the same time, Auburn was called for more holding penalties in this one than they've been called for all season, I think. That's just nuts.

2) The Targeting Call. Eh, yeah, that was probably targeting. It was also almost bang-bang live. My biggest question was the orientation of Davis' head. One replay review seemed to show his facemask going into the chest of the receiver. One looks to be the crown of the helmet. After the game, Gus Malzahn mentioned it's hard to coach a good hit these days. I agree to an extent, but it seems like it would be easier to just make sure players are taught about keeping the head up.

3) T.J. Neal In Relief. I had honestly forgotten about Neal. When Auburn needed it most, Neal did a pretty good job of stepping up and filling the void left by Deshaun Davis. For all the "3rd and Auburn" stuff, I have to figure not having the Tigers' two primary linebackers hurt a bit, but overall Neal had a good game for a guy who hasn't seen the field much, this season.

4) QB Play. It should be obvious now why Sean White is Auburn's quarterback. Even "banged up," he played a much better game and sparked the offensive revival. Shut the run game down? White will just go 10-13. They're both not the best protecting the football when hit hard, but White's throwing ability is far beyond Franklin's. If you don't think so, then ask yourself why - when he's the #2 guy who is supposed to be able to run the whole offense - he hardly ever passed. Franklin is a dynamic athlete, yes. But he's not a great QB. To the point that if White gets hurt in the next 2-3 weeks, don't be shocked if a redshirt is pulled off.

5) So, What Was Up With Sean? According to Gus Malzahn and others, Sean White did not practice all week. Phillip Marshall reported he was told by an insider that Sean took a lot of first-team reps on Thursday. What's the truth? I'm almost willing to go with Marshall and say that Sean's "shoulder issue" is a combination of being banged up (he was favoring it a bit at Ole Miss) and maybe a little something else. A first half suspension, maybe? Was he sick? He did run to the locker room at one point in the 2nd half and came running back out. Need to use the restroom? Get a cortisone shot? I have no idea. That whole situation was just really strange. We'll likely never know, though, because Gus Malzahn is extremely paranoid about issues like that.

6) The Pooch Kicks. Yes, it's kinda annoying to see Carlson's stats screwed up by not having him kick deep. However, Vandy has a very good FG returner - one of the best in their history - and did you see how Auburn was giving up some returns to Ole Miss last week? I really wish the Tigers had just let him kick it deep, anyway, but I understand the strategy. Especially in a close game when you're trying to limit momentum.

7) The Broadcast. So. Many. Commercials. Here's the thing about commercials, though. ESPN sells a certain number of commercials per game. They're going to get those all in. So, if the gameplay action doesn't lend itself to commercials for a while, you're going to get those times where it's *play*timeout*commercial*play*timeout*commercial. It's annoying, but it's going to happen. That being said... yeah, the broadcasters were every bit as bad as Twitter made it sound. I feel bad for Mike Patrick. He used to be one of the best. Ed Cunningham... yeah, he sucks.

8) Pettway Is So Dang Good. His fourth straight game of 150+ yards. All of those against SEC defenses. He's the first Auburn running back to have four straight 150 yard games since Vincent Jackson. He's over 1100 yards for the year through 6.5 games worth of carries. And, now, we're left wondering whether he's going to be available for Georgia. He pulled up lame on Auburn's last drive. I've seen conflicting reports on how he's doing. Hopefully it was just a cramp. We're going to need him against UGA. Oh, and the fumble... I'm guessing they ruled his calf and ankle were down. So suck it, Ed Cunningham.

9) Auburn Controls Its Destiny. Gus Malzahn continues to mention that the Tigers are taking things one game at a time. That philosophy just became even more important after Mississippi State upset the Aggies in Starkville, yesterday. With that, Auburn can now win the SEC West if it wins out. That's a very tall order since it involves beating Alabama in Tuscaloosa, but it's possible. First, though, comes the Georgia game. The Bulldogs are coming off a last-second win over Kentucky and will be looking to get Kirby Smart his first "signature" win as a head coach. The game is in Athens. It will not be easy for Auburn. That's particularly true if Auburn doesn't get a lot of banged up players back and healthy.

War Eagle, y'all. Amen Corner is upon us, and Auburn still has a chance to make a run at the biggest prize of them all. I'll take it.

The game is early, so get your comments and thoughts in early, too!

So, we added an extra little bit in this week. With Kamryn Pettway only needing 67 yards until he reaches 1000 yards for the season, I asked the staff to also predict when he will cross that threshold.

Son of Crow

I'm sticking with 32-13, Auburn. I think their defense is pretty salty and will keep this one from being Arkansas-level ugly. However, Auburn's front seven might get in the end zone once against their offense so I might be wrong.

Pettway will get his 67 yards by the five-minute mark in the second quarter. I bet Johnson gets a lot of touches this week as he continues to get healthier. I really want him to throw a pass out of wildcat just to make defenses honest.

AU_Jonesy

I always thought Mason was a good hire for Vanderbilt even if he didn't have a SEC background because he could make them very good on one side of the ball. He's done that with this defense. Though the schedule isn't exactly filled with great offenses, they've managed to be in the top half of the SEC in yards per game allowed. And their strength is their front seven. However, the per-play numbers don't help them much, as they drop to 11th (behind Mississippi State). Auburn needs to avoid mistakes and play with confidence. The defense should hold Vandy under 17, and that should be plenty.

Auburn 33

Vanderbilt 10

Oh, I forgot about the Pettway bit. I'll say he does it on his 8th carry. Late 1st/Early 2nd quarter.

Vandy's defense is salty and Zach Cunningham is one of the best LBs in the league. I expect them to sell out on the run and try to force White to throw. Pettway still gets 1k (10 carries, early second Q) and probably another 100-yard game, but I don't expect him to have 30 carries. Maybe half. He needs to be fresh to murder UGA and Bama. A healthy dose of Kerryon should do. Auburn can still impose it's will in the trenches.

Vandy's offense is frankly not very good, and AUs D should be pissed about a mediocre performance last week. Vandy may get a couple garbage time scores.

39-10 Weagles.

Ryan Sterritt

With the early kickoff, I think this is a ho-hum game that should be comfortable but not a major blowout until the second half. I'd guess maybe 14-3 at the half, 38-6 final. We'll hopefully spread out the carries, so I don't think Pettway gets to 1000 until the first drive of the second half.

Dr. Z.

This is a game Auburn should win going away, but they have to be careful to avoid a letdown in a sandwich game. Candy' offense is aww-ful. They shouldn't be able to move the ball at all. HoweverI gotta give a shout out to their H-back Bailey McElwain, who hails from our little burb in Trussville. He's done a really good job in that spot for the Dores.

White will have a big day as Vandy stacks the box. But they won't be able to cover Davis (pick a Davis, any Davis). Pettway breaks 1000 on the second drive.

Walt

Auburn wins big, though it may not be as high as the spread. Then again, I really don't see Vanderbilt's offense scoring much - if anything - on Auburn's defense, so I could also see Auburn wearing them down completely and opening it up in a big way during the second half. I'll say 31-10.

Pettway goes over 100 yards on the 3rd drive of the game, which will be either at the end of the 1st quarter or early in the 2nd quarter. Either that or he does it on the very first drive when he breaks some big runs.

A quick breakdown of the game and how to watch.

Auburn is looking to break a losing streak and even the series - yes, you read that right - with Vanderbilt today in Jordan-Hare Stadium. Unlike the last two times Auburn played Vanderbilt, though, the Tigers are not having one of their bad seasons that tend to come every few years. This is an Auburn team firing on all cylinders.

When Auburn Has The Ball

Vanderbilt has a salty defense led by Zach Cunningham, an excellent linebacker who could play for anyone. The Commodores have the toughest defense Auburn has played since the LSU game.

That still shouldn't be enough to prevent the Tigers from moving the ball relatively easily. Vanderbilt does give up some big plays, and Auburn has been generating some big plays this year. Sean White may throw the ball a bit more in this one with to open the running game up if Vandy stacks the box. I don't expect Auburn to try to cruise through this one, though. With their tough defense, Vanderbilt isn't a team you want to give confidence to.

When Vanderbilt Has The Ball

The Vandy QB has been... not good. He hasn't thrown for very many yards in any game. What they do have, though, is the SEC's second-leading rusher (behind Pettway) in Ralph Webb. Auburn will have to work to shut Webb down and make sure that when Vanderbilt is in an obvious passing situation, they're able to get to the QB fast and prevent dump-off passes like Ole Miss was able to execute last week.

1) SITUATION

a) Enemy -

Intelligence reports indicate that the Auburn Tigers' opponent for Week 6 is a Southeastern Conference team led featuring a relatively weak passer, one of the better RBs in the conference, and a tenacious defense. They have beaten decent Group of 5 opponents Middle Tennessee State and Western Kentucky, as well as knocking off Georgia. In Athens. On Homecoming. HAHAHAHAHA LOLDWAGS. The enemy will attempt to shut down Auburn's offensive attack on the ground with one of the better linebackers in the SEC in Zach Cunningham - he who stuffed UGA's last gasp 4th down play - and force the Tigers to win with Sean White throwing the football. Their running game is their primary offense behind Zach Webb, and they will likely attempt to control the ball and the clock with the ground game and take advantages of Auburn loading the box to beat Auburn on a few deep passes.

b) Friendly -

(1) Higher Unit Mission Two Levels Up: No Change

(2) Higher Unit Mission One Level Up: No Change

c) Civil Considerations:

The local populace will be very supportive of the Auburn Tigers. This will be a morning game against a SEC opponent with a very tough defense. The crowd should do everything possible to get excited and help ensure the team isn't lulled to sleep by a boring and quiet home stadium.

d) Attachments & Detachments:

Attachments: Auburn University Marching Band, Auburn Cheerleaders, Aubie the Tiger, Nova and/or Spirit

Detachments: None

2) MISSION

The Auburn Tigers Football Team take on the Vanderbilt Commodores at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama at 1100 hours local time, in order to advance the program's goal of reaching the SEC Championship and College Football Post Season.

3) EXECUTION

a) Concept of the Operation.

The football team will play four quarters of fast, physical football against all opponents with each portion of the team performing special duties assigned to them.

Scheme of Maneuver.

The operation will consist of multiple phases. Phase 1- the planning and preparation phase - begins at the end of the Ole Miss game and ends with the team departing for the Remain Over Night (RON) site in Montgomery. Phase 2 - the travel phase - begins upon arrival at the RON site and ends with Tiger Walk. Phase 3 - the execution phase - begins upon arrival at the stadium and consists of pre-game warm-ups and game activity. It will end upon completion of the contest. Phase 4 - the recovery phase - begins with post-game locker-room activities and ends upon the team's arrival back at the athletic facility in Auburn.

Offense, the main effort, will conduct fast-paced, minimal communication attacks against the enemy utilizing multiple air and land-based weapons systems. Sean White will lead the unit on the field with quick, accurate passes, good reads of the defense on read-option plays, and effective driving of a fast-paced tempo. With the running game clicking as it is, Auburn will likely rely on Kamryn Pettway, Kerryon Johnson, and Stanton Truitt to do a good bit of work in this game. Vanderbilt's defense will be the toughest Auburn has faced since LSU - they shut down Nick Chubb fairly well - so Sean White's passing ability may be needed more in this game than it has been in recent weeks. Protecting the quarterback, keeping control of the ball, limiting negative plays, and preventing injuries should be the focus of the offense in this game. I would also like to see an increase in deep passes to work on the timing, throws, etc. Through speed of maneuver, simplicity in planning, and security of ball-control, the offense will attack the defense and cross the opponent's goal line as quickly and as often as possible.

Defense, a supporting effort, will employ fast/physical assaults on the opponent's offense. Vanderbilt's offensive strength is in its running back - Ralph Webb. Their quarterback is not a threat to keep the ball for serious gains and has not been an effective passer. He is averaging barely over 50% completion percentage has 4 touchdowns to 3 interceptions, and has been sacked 17 times. Auburn's defensive line should be able to focus on shutting down the running game with the help of the linebackers filling gaps while rushing fast and hard on obvious passing downs.Through surprise, mass, and economy of force, the defense will prevent the opposing offense from crossing the Auburn goal line through expending of their downs or through creating turnovers.

Special Teams, a supporting effort, will conduct all kicking and return duties. #Legatron will hopefully not be needed for short field goals and is available for trick plays. Through maneuver, simplicity, mass, and economy of force, special teams will attempt to score points when supporting the offensive efforts and prevent opponents from scoring points while supporting defensive efforts.

Fans, a supporting effort, will conduct themselves in a manner befitting proper sportsmanship standards while still loudly cheering on the Auburn Tigers football team and disrupting the opponents' game plan, rhythms, snap counts, etc.
