DECISION2019 began with four candidates vying for the coveted job of being Auburn’s starting quarterback in 2019. Following spring practice, Gus Malzhan cut the competition to two: Joey Gatewood and Bo Nix. Heading into fall camp there was a lot of #Greatwood buzz but things changed after the first scrimmage. Nix reportedly threw three picks (two were drops by wide receivers) but also lead scoring drives. Gatewood didn’t turn the ball over but he didn't score either. After that practice, it felt like maybe things were tipping Nix’s way.
That buzz continued into the following week and Auburn’s 2nd scrimmage. Again, it was Nix who did a better job of consistently moving the football and this time did so without turning the ball over. Today, Gus Malzahn made things official. Bo Nix will be Auburn’s starting quarterback in 2019.
Nix will be Auburn’s first true freshman quarterback to start for the Tigers since 1946. He also, per The Athletic’s Justin Ferguson, has the shortest name of any letterman in program history.
FUN FACT: If he signs with Auburn, Bo Nix will have the shortest name of any letterman in program history. (I actually checked this.)— Justin Ferguson (@JFergusonAU) January 10, 2018
Now Auburn will head into game prep with knowledge of who will be running this offense. I fully expect Joey Gatewood to still have a role moving forward, he’s just too dang talented not too. But this is Nix’s offense for the foreseeable future.
There are gonna be some frustrating moments this season. Not only is Nix a true freshman who will have to go on the road to Tiger Stadium and The Swamp but he’s also a risk taker who believes he can make any and every throw. There are going to be mistakes. There are going to be failures. But there are also going to be incredible “wow” moments and plenty of success. Nix is a playmaker and a winner. He’s been preparing for this moment for basically his whole life. His moment has come. It’s time to see what the young gunslinger can do.
